Ah, confidence. It is often exuded effortlessly by those who possess it, while those who need it struggle to express it. Yet, it is a fundamental trait of effective leadership. How can you gain unwavering confidence?
When you envision a confident leader, who comes to mind? What attributes do you associate with confidence? A confident individual is typically self-assured and decisive. They command attention, display open body language, speak clearly, and maintain steady eye contact. However, confidence need not be domineering or boisterous to be impactful. One does not have to be assertive constantly or entirely inflexible. Indeed, some of the most confident leaders I have encountered are introverted and quiet. Confidence is an internal mindset that projects competence and a sense of responsibility, which can often accompanied by humility, kindness, and compassion.
Confidence is a trait many entrepreneurs struggle with, especially when they are just starting out. Entrepreneurs, in my assessment, are among the most fearless, tenacious, and courageous individuals out there. It takes immense bravery to embark on a new venture from scratch or a vision. It takes courage to put oneself out there and let their community and the world know that they are doing something new. Entrepreneurs often contend with familial and societal expectations, financial uncertainties, and personal fears of failure and embarrassment. Transitioning from one career to an entirely different field can be daunting due to the knowledge gap. Being an entrepreneur requires grit and an unwavering passion.
How, then, can one gain confidence in uncharted territory? As motivational speaker Brian Tracy aptly put it, "Confidence is a habit that can be developed by acting as if you already had the confidence you desire to have." This statement, simple yet profound, underscores the widespread "fake it 'til you make it" approach popular on social media. While emulating true confidence can be effective, there is more to confidence than mere pretense. Dale Carnegie's timeless advice highlights the importance of action in building confidence: "Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."
The act of doing, moving forward, is what cultivates confidence. You may not have a strong feeling of confidence when you first start your entrepreneurial journey. You may have contemplated starting your own business for years and are just now taking steps to bring that vision to life. You might feel overwhelmingly unqualified and inadequate, but let me tell you: Your feelings are not objective reality, they are merely an expression of your fears. As you put one foot in front of the other, and begin taking action in the direction you want your company to go, you will gain greater confidence. Gaining experience takes time and is cumulative; it involves successes and failures, learning from each experience, and persisting through challenges. Confidence grows from the consistent pursuit of your goals, learning from each step, and pressing forward despite uncertainties. It is this prolonged action and perseverance that ultimately build true confidence.
