In my experience, the most successful managers possess a diverse, multi-departmental background. Having success in management means gaining experience in multiple areas of business such as accounting, customer service, sales, and production, rather than just one field. This breadth of experience broadens your perspective and enhances your ability to understand and improve company processes.
But what do you do if you don’t have comprehensive business experience?
For example, if you have always worked in accounting but aspire to a higher-level operations role (I may be speaking a bit from experience here), begin by exploring how other departments interact with your department. Identify points of friction and flow, and seek feedback on how processes can be streamlined. Engaging with different departments will help you gain a comprehensive understanding of how the entire organization functions. It also shows proactivity and can win you huge points with the higher-ups!
Ask for greater responsibility with higher-level tasks. This could involve leading cross-functional projects, participating in strategic planning sessions, or taking on interim roles in other departments. By doing so, you will not only demonstrate your capability to handle broader responsibilities but also build a reputation as a versatile and proactive leader within the organization.
Great leaders often have amazing professional relationships. Seek to strengthen professional relationships both inside and outside of your company. The team(s) within your company have valuable experience that can help you in a variety of contexts, and you will likely increase the feeling of cohesion by taking a genuine interest in their work and expertise. Do your best to strengthen the relationship between the company and its customers and vendors, by providing proactive and helpful communication. Successful managers stay connected with their team and serve as a source of collaboration and connection.
Taking the steps above consistently and with genuine effort can give you an edge in advancing your career. It demonstrates that you are not only competent in your primary area of expertise but also have a holistic view of the company’s operations and a proactive attitude towards continuous improvement.
